Statement of Faith
Thor's Fight with the Giants by Winge (1872) Michael by Reni (1636) Apollo Vanquishing the Serpent Python by Moreau (1885)
Growing up, I had no religion. I was not a spiritual person in any way, nor was my family. For many of my years, as a gay man, I feared Christians and Catholics, growing up in a world where most of those folks would refer to me as an “abomination” simply for existing. Not only was I not a spiritual person, but the largest spiritual influence in my world also taught me I was disgusting.
As an adult, I was drawn into spirituality thanks to science. My husband gave me a DNA test for Christmas, which fascinated me so much it lead me to ancestry and genealogical research. As soon as I began connecting with these family trees, that’s when my mediumistic talents began to present themselves.
As I discovered my ability to work and communicate with the Dead, I began to interpret them as forces that are with us always, not in some distant reality or dimension that’s far from here. What I discovered is that the Spirit World overlaps and interacts with our world to a far greater degree than most of us understand. I always sense our Beloved Dead as “Umbrellas,” or forces and energies that are with us always. They guide us, they heal us, they lend us direction, and I believe our connection to Spirit is generally what we would call intuition. I discovered that as Spirit can move through me, providing messages, so can our Spirits move through us all.
As I continued my work, I began to sense larger energies that were far greater than the human Dead. These were the Spirits we would call Angels or Gods & Goddesses. To keep things simple for me, I just thought of them as the “Umbrellas” to us all, living and dead…really, really big Umbrellas.
Believe me when I tell you: I had a hard time acknowledging and understanding these larger “Umbrellas” were the spirits we would know of as Angels. After many experiences, I could not deny, and after many synchronicities, I realized that the Angels of Hebrew and Christian mythology were ultimately the Gods & Goddesses of Norse, Egyptian, Hindu, Greek, Roman, and other world mythologies and religions.
I discovered that these greater spirits, the “Umbrellas” of us all, are ultimately beyond our human ability to comprehend fully, and ultimately, each human culture would touch upon these larger, global spirits and interpret them differently, giving different names to the same spirit. I believe these spirits exist outside our ability to understand them, much in the same way that we can have a concept of gravity, with many cultures giving gravity a different name, yet we may not be able to ultimately understand the scope of that force. As limited as our understanding may be, it is possible to know these Spirits and to understand their wants and desires. I also understand that as they are what we would call “Higher Powers,” I am very limited in my understanding of them and am not hesitant to say they are far smarter and far more powerful than we’ll ever rightly know while in our human incarnations.
Over the course of my work, I found one particular Spirit, one particular god or angel, kept popping up, making themselves known in my life, in my dreams, and in my work. Through my work with this Spirit, I better came to understand, as much as I am able, that the morality of Spirit is certainly not the morality of humans. Humans get caught up in labeling “good” or “bad,” “virtue” vs “sin,” when ultimately I believe the morality of these larger Spirits very much lines up with the morality of Nature.
Balance.
Essentially nothing in nature is “good” or “bad.” Nature, left to its own devices, will balance itself. There is nothing inherently wrong with alcohol, for example, as it simply exists. How we interact with it, and how others around us interact with it, will either contribute to balance or contribute to imbalance. In this natural world where life requires death, there will be pain and disease that ultimately serve a higher purpose. Because of our free will, humans are really great at causing pain and turmoil that doesn’t serve a higher purpose.
If I were to look at this world and label any part of it “demons” or “devils,” I would label the pains and torments caused by humans (inadvertently or intentionally) as that: pain and chaos that don’t serve a higher purpose. To live we will die, which will cause pain to us and to others, yet to have life we must have death.
While living requires dying, it does not require suffering.
Yet suffering, necessary and unnecessary alike, will happen to us as humans. There are Spirits, great and small alike, that work to help us reduce this suffering. The primary Spirit that made itself known to me is known by many as the Archangel Michael. Through my experience, and I don’t ask anyone else to believe or know this, I have found the Archangel Michael is also Apollo of Greek and Roman mythology and is also Thor of Norse mythology. Each of these larger gods has a weapon, Michael with his sword, Apollo with his arrows, Thor with his hammer. Each of these spirits has a myth where they battle the “Devil” or “demons.” Michael battles Satan in the end times, Apollo battles Python, the great serpent, and Thor battles the World Serpent at Ragnarok. Michael battles demons and devils, while Thor battles the giants, or “Jotuns,” the forces of nature and chaos that must be kept at bay.
Ultimately, this Spirit is one of balance, and I believe the Sword of Michael, the Hammer of Thor, and the arrows of Apollo are symbolic representations of that Spirit's ability to reduce pain and chaos that don’t serve a higher purpose. I believe the healers of this world, the nurses, teachers, herbalists, and even those who would consider themselves “witches” are agents of balance. When someone walks through this world, looking to reduce the unnecessary pain and turmoil caused by humans, they are a Sword of Michael, an Arrow of Apollo, a Hammer of Thor.
I do not offer this up for anyone to adjust or change their belief systems. I offer this up as part of my dedication to this great “Umbrella” and Spirit that has made himself known to me, and through which I have seen tangible miracles. It is because of these tangible miracles, experienced by me as well as by others, that I can easily say I believe in this Spirit and the balance he brings.
I offer this Statement of Faith so those who may be called to work with me so they may understand the greater powers that I believe sustain and empower me.
